Project Cape Verde

Turtle Foundation has been working in Cape Verde, West Africa since we learned that in 2007 over 1100 female turtles were brutally slaughtered for their meat as they came ashore to nest.  We started in 2008 protecting one beach, and in 2010, with the support of the local military and international volunteers, we protected 5 beaches.  We also focus on youth and community education, ecotourism, and work to find alternative sources of income for the community. With additional funding we could expand our protection, research activities, and community assistance programs.

Project Indonesia

Turtle Foundation has been working in the Berau islands off the east coast of Borneo since 2000.  We currently hire 15 local rangers to protect the nests of green sea turtles from being collected and sold as an aphrodisiac, and to collect vital data on the nesting behavior of the turtles.  Three islands are currently protected, and we hope to raise enough funds to protect two more islands in this important nesting area.  As a result of our program, over 4 million hatchlings have been allowed to hatch from their nests!

Turtle Foundation - because extinction means forever!

The Turtle Foundation is an international charitable organization with offices in the United States, Germany, Switzerland and Indonesia. The foundation is a dedicated volunteer effort. At most 8% of its total expenses are used for administration. The Turtle Foundation currently operates its own important protection projects in Cape Verde and in Indonesia. In order to continue its successful work the foundation urgently needs additional financial support.

Research project on Boavista

A new interdisciplinary research project at IFM-GEOMAR

On Boavista, in a new interdisciplinary research project, marine scientists from the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences (IFM-GEOMAR) in Kiel, Germany, study the dynamics of the world's third largest nesting population of the endangered loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) on the Cape Verde islands and the mechanisms and genetics of their reproduction. Turtle Foundation is of the party ...
