Lynnette Miller, a Peace Corps volunteer teaching kids on nearby Santiago Island, brought her kids to one of Turtle Foundation's educational beach camps at Lacacao Beach. Here is her story (and she is a GREAT writer!) :
The first time I saw a turtle lay eggs was a magical night for me. Lying silently, breathlessly behind the turtle, watching this intimate process on the beautiful beach at Lacacao camp.

Since 1978, Loggerhead turtles have been considered "Threatened" throughout their range. In 2011, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service split loggerhead turtles into 9 separate populations for conservation efforts. Today, 5 of those populations were designated as "Endangered", a status indicating the population is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significan portion of its range. All sea turtles are either endangered or threatened, the latter meaning that the species is declining and is likely to beome endangered in the foreseeable future.
Cape Verde's loggerhead population is in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean DPS.
The population designations are as follows:
ESA Threatened- (ESA = Endangered Species Act)
(1) Northwest Atlantic Ocean DPS (DPS = Distinct Population Segment)
(2) South Atlantic Ocean DPS
(3) Southeast Indo-Pacific Ocean DPS
(4) Southwest Indian Ocean DPS
ESA Endangered-
(5) Northeast Atlantic Ocean DPS
(6) Mediterranean Sea DPS
(7) North Indian Ocean DPS
(8) North Pacific Ocean DPS
(9) South Pacific Ocean DPS

A Turtle Foundation conduz patrulhas
A Turtle Foundation pede ás
A Turtle Foundation lamenta

"After 3 and a half weeks of working here I now understand not only why the Loggerhead is protected because of its endangered species status but also because it is an incredible creature. The first turtle that I was lucky enough to see nest appeared on July 15th and I can easily say that it was one of the most amazing moments of my life. As soon as the turtle was spotted I was captivated by its pure brilliance and magnificent beauty."

From Joana Hancock, our Field Coordinator:
So plans are underway for the start of the season, and we've been busy! Setting up equipment, interviewing people, planning data collection and training, and so on, so on... and our first volunteer comes tomorrow!!!
Today we did our first survey of Boa Esperança beach... somewhat relieved that there are no signs of activity yet either... the camp is planned to be ready on the 21st!!! The beach looks as beautiful as ever, and we are all very excited with the start of the season! :-)
The first camp to be set up is the Lacacão Camp, planned to open on the 15th. Around the 21st we will start the patrols on Norte and Canto beaches, and inaugurate the Boa Esperança Camp. Then, finally, we are all set.
LET THE TURTLES COME!

The RIU Touareg, being built on Lacaçao Beach on Boavista Island, is scheduled to open in May. It is a massive hotel, and being built on a beach heavily used by nesting Loggerhead Turtles, who nest from June through September. Hatchlings come out of the nests 50-60 days after the eggs are laid. We are very concerned about the effects of the construction and the lighting from the hotel on the nesting turtles and hatchlings.

In a report titled "Global Patterns of Marine Turtle Bycatch," Dr. Bryan Wallace of Conservation International and Dr. Rebecca Lewison of San Diego State University, with several co-authors from Duke University's Center for Marine Conservation, investigated the impact of bycatch on sea turtles around the globe from 1990-2008.
The review cited 85,000 turtles reported caught, but as less than 1% of fisheries were covered, this number is probably up to 100 times less than the actual number of turtles caught and killed in the last 2 decades. Read what YOU can do to help:

From Joana Hancock - Turtle Foundation's Field Coordinator on Boavista:
Two adults and one teenager were arrested last week on Curral Velho Beach.
Just before the start of a patrol a turtle was caught and taken away by car. Soldiers were alerted to this suspect activity, and when the car was found with a bucket and ice near the area where the turtles had been taken before, the soldiers did not hesitate to find the poachers and arrest them. One of them is a local driver, who took his son for his first "turtle hunt".
Fortunately no turtle was killed that time, but problems in the Curral Velho beach remain, with turtles often disorientated from the headlights of many cars that make illegal tours in the beaches of Curral Velho and João Barrosa. There is intense traffic of unknown origin in that area at all times of the night.
In Lacacão beach, the effects of the light coming from the construction site of the new hotel RIU TUAREG are noticeable, with less than 150 nests recorded so far in this beach and an average time of 2.5h of nesting time (followed by disorientation) by the females. Often these turtles need to be "rescued" from the construction site, where they get trapped, and are not able to find their own way to the sea. Falling easy prey to potential poachers living at the construction site, our teams have been doing everything they can to rescue these turtles as much as possible, and avoid the slaughtering. Lacacão remains the most problematic area, as 4 turtles were found recently killed in the construction site. On the other side, mass flooding of the beach two weeks ago by broken pipes and sewage run-off, coupled with extreme high tides have probably compromised all the nests of the season.

This includes the efforts that are being made to change the mentality of local people as well as explaining that the turtles could disappear for ever in just a few years.
