According to the Maritime Delegate for the Fogo-Brava region, Carlos Rocha, the turtle was captured in Salinas, one of the beaches north of São Filipe, where the animals often come ashore to lay their eggs. The two sold some of the meat in the area in which they captured the turtle, and then attempted to sell the rest in the city of São Filipe, at which time they were arrested by police.
Maritime authorities believe that the arrest and trial will discourage others from being tempted to kill sea turtles. Currently, several of Fogo’s main beaches are being monitored to protect the turtles laying eggs on the shore.
The monitoring project is being developed in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment, Rural Development and Marine Resources, the São Filipe municipal chamber and the local Youth Center, with the support of the National Fishing Development Institute (INDP) and technical coordination from biologist Silvana Roque.
The entities carry out night-time surveillance of the beaches between Fonte Bila and Nossa Senhora between June and October.
