BALI, February 2006.
Marine Police in Bali, Indonesia, successfully seized a boat loaded with 158 sea turtles on 22 February 2006 at Sanur beach. Local fishermen alerted police that a boat carrying Green turtles (Chelonia mydas) was attemptling to smuggle its live cargo to another country.
Through the intervention of the Bali police, the captain of the boat and three crew members were arrested. The turtles were then unloaded from the boat for examination, measurement and tagging.
Fortunately all but three of the turtles survived the incident. They were released at Kuta Beach by the Head of Bali Police Department and other police officers, including Director of Bali Marine Police, Agus Sutikno. Members of ProFauna Indonesia, Kuta Villagers and tourists participated in the release of the turtles.
The event attracted the attention of many foreign tourists in Kuta who enthusiastically helped the local police release the turtles into the sea. By way of thanks, ProFauna Indonesia handed an IOSEA 'Year of the Turtle' calendar to the Head of Bali Police Department for his dedication in enforcing the Indonesian wildlife protection law and helping to save these turtles.
