The Indonesian department of fisheries is now reviewing to renew the permits for the collection of green turtle eggs from the southern Java Sea region (Pantai Pangumbahan, Desa Gunung Batu, Kecamatan Ciracap, Kabupaten Sukabumi) for the upcoming year.
The company purchasing such permits is lead by business man Haji Adang Gunawan. Sine the fifties, green turtle eggs are collected and sold by his company, named CV DAYA BAKTI , allowed by the local government and the Indonesian fishery department.
The company is allowed to obtain 50 % of eggs laid for commercial purpose and 50 % of the eggs should be incubated for release in the sea.
But who controls this percentage? No proper survey has been made, no proper study has been conducted to reveal the negative influence of the long term commercial practices on this very important green turtle nesting site.
And the management of the sea turtle eggs (collection and placement in plastic buckets, in dark humid rooms) very likely will lead to a high mortality rate, fungal diseases within the hatchlings and an improper release (release only when there are visitors)
International Animal Rescue Indonesia strives to protect wildlife in Indonesia and wishes to end this exploitation. IAR wishes to allow the eggs to be hatched naturally.
When IAR visited the farm in September 2007, our team witnessed:
- Hatchlings kept inside dark rooms in (5) plastic buckets, awaiting 'release'
- Twenty Plastic buckets with Sea turtle Eggs inside
- Export crates for eggs with the destination Hong Kong and Shang Hai
In various towns (Sukabumi, Bogor, Jakarta) sea turtle eggs are sold openly.
As long as this company who exploits sea turtles is allowed by the Indonesian Government, all regulations throughout the country to protect sea turtles seem useless.
Why would a fisherman not be allowed to take sea turtle eggs for consumption if a company is allowed to exploit sea turtle eggs in their thousands?
It is time for a change. Please let your voice be heard through a fax to the department of fisheries with the following address: jl, merdeka timur no. 16 jakarta, and the local head of the Sukabumi district: +62 266433611 (+62 21 3500042) and ask them to end the commercial activities of CV Bakti. Or send your letter through email to guineachimps@yahoo.com with the subject protest letter and we will bring all printed letters and statements to the Indonesian fishery department and the local government of the Sukabumi district.
We want to see this important sea turtle nesting beach be protected and managed by local people in collaboration with an NGO in this new year which will be a big progress for seaturtle conservation in Indonesia
